Name: Kurogane

Canon: Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle

Canon point: After his arrival in Nihon, before he receives the mechanical arm (Chapter 167). Specifically from the moment when he gets punched in the face by Fai, and possibly blacks out for a split second or so.

Age: The Wiki says ”Around 25”, so I'm going with that.

Appearance: He is ridiculously tall, quite possibly around 7 feet. Well-muscled and broad-shouldered, but he’s still more towards the lean side than the “towering hunk of man-muscle”-side. His hair is black, short and very spiky, with a few longer bangs rebelling against the norm around his face. His eyes are deep red, don’t ask me why.

He almost always dresses completely in black, if he can. Dat ninja fashion-sense.

He doesn't do the whole facial expressions thing much, apart from ”glare”, ”angry glare” and ”fucking fury”. A faint smile to signal approval, a grin in the heat of battle, perhaps, but all in all he's not your most expressive character. His body-language ranges from understated and lazy – most of the time – to aggressive and violent when he loses his temper.

At this point in canon, he has cut off his own left arm at the elbow.

Background: http://tsubasa.wikia.com/wiki/Kurogane (Story section, Early Life and Journey up to his arrival in Nihon.)

Personality: It is probably rather hard to get a favourable first impression when meeting Kurogane. The combination of his tragic past, his fanatic devotion to Tomoyo, his disregard for others, and the fact that he’s been rather brusquely uprooted from his home makes him act like a giant shit at first. He is rude, uncouth, has an extremely short temper, and he really doesn’t mince his words.

Well, when he uses words at all. He’s not really that much into talking. He says what needs to be said, when it needs to be said, and not much more than that. More loquacious people seem to both confuse and annoy him, especially if they keep prattling at him. Even as his values and views of life change somewhat during the course of his travels, this doesn't seem to change even marginally.

Not surprisingly, Kurogane has a very strict sense of duty, meaning that he’s faultlessly, fanatically loyal, will never lie or back down on a promise, and will do anything to protect the people he loves. But on the other hand, he will not always do as those same people say, or even listen to their point of view. At the start of his adventure, he is quite fine with killing off dozens of people to protect one person who really wants him to stop killing people. And while he does learn to listen more to others during his adventures, he is still never going to obey anyone blindly, and if there is something he doesn’t want to do... well, then he won’t.

Kurogane is not only very honest with others, but also with himself, and it gets to him when other people aren’t. This becomes clear by the way he repeatedly calls Fai out on his fake smiles and general dishonesty as well as his habit of deceiving himself during the course of their adventures, and he seems both frustrated and uneasy when Fai continues being evasive and acting as if he doesn’t understand what Kurogane is on about. And it’s rather obvious that while he gets momentarily enraged by Fai’s habit of giving him stupid nicknames and harassing him non-stop, his biggest problem with the other man is really his lack of honesty combined with his disregard for himself.

Back to that short temper for a moment. Kurogane is not the world’s most patient man by any stretch of imagination, and he does have a tendency of resorting to shouting and threats of bodily harm rather quickly once that very limited patience runs out. It’s safe to say that Kurogane has a violent streak the size of... well, the size of his ego as a warrior. (As seen by how he actually draws his sword and attacks Fai for aggravating him, although that might be because he knows Fai can avoid him.) In any case, he is definitely a bit on the “attack first, ask questions if there’s anything left”-end of the spectrum. But he does have self-control, and he doesn’t attack without at least being given a reason to do so. He wouldn’t attack someone who was unarmed unless they attacked him first.

When it comes to actual battle, Kurogane loves nothing more than a really good fight, and it’s more or less only in battle that you actually see him smile. Otherwise it’s pretty much permascowl-mode, but when he fights he seems to genuinely enjoy himself. He is very proud of his skills, and seems to assume by default that he is a better fighter than anyone ever, period.

Despite being such a grumpy bastard, and despite being unapproachable, dismissive and probably rude at the beginning of any acquaintance, Kurogane does have huge heart, and as mentioned before there is nothing he wouldn’t do for the people he cares about. He is however a huge believer in tough love, and will never make things easy for his loved ones; he is constantly challenging his friends to be better than they are, and this seems to be the way he shows his love and respect. He would see no point in allowing people he cares about to sell themselves short.

While starting out on his adventure as a person who sees life purely in black and white – that is, people he needs to kill and people he might allow to live for now – and has very little patience for anything in between, Kurogane has slowly come to terms with that life isn't always that simple. That is not to say that he doesn't still have a very direct, no-bullshit way of viewing life, and that he in some situations still wouldn't swear up and down that there is only one right course of action; he is still very firm in his principles. But he's learned to accept that not every problem can be killed with large amounts of physical violence, and not every situation is what it seems like at first. And that protecting someone involves more than just pulverizing everything that threatens them.

At the point in canon where he is now, he has finally come to terms with that he for a while had lost his way from what he once wanted to be – a protector, and someone who sought strength only for the sake of what that strength could achieve. Now that he's found his way back to it, he will be even more protective of everyone that he sees as his to protect, if also perhaps a bit more patient with the people closest to him, and a bit more prone to listen to their point of view.

Skills and Powers: Well. He’s a ninja. So, he’s an expert swordfighter and generally damn good at surviving. Mind, since he has lost one arm at this point in canon – his dominant arm at that – and hasn't gotten a replacement, it will take him some time to re-learn his sword skills. Also, the stealth part of being a ninja? Not so much. He probably could be stealthy if he wanted to, but since he enjoys a good fight way too much, he will attack anything that comes at him head-on.

Some of his battle techniques definitely fall into the field of “magic”, since normally waving a sword around does not generate giant force-waves which crush everything in their path. He is also able to sense the auras of living and dead things, and telling the difference.

Items: At the point he's taken from, Kurogane only has the yukata he's been sleeping in; he doesn't even have his sword, having been so silly as to drop it when he was using it to cut off his own arm.
